Drive: private storage that follows you

Files and notes sealed on your device, kept by nodes that cannot read them, shared one file at a time. What Drive does and why it is built this way.

DRIVE 369 DAO

Drive is where your files and notes live. It looks like the drive you know, and it works differently underneath: everything is encrypted on your device before it goes anywhere, so the network that keeps it never learns what it holds.

What you do with it

  • Add files by dropping them anywhere in the window, or write notes that several of your devices can edit.
  • Find things with the search bar at the top of Drive.
  • Share with a link that opens exactly one thing. The link carries a read capability for that file and nothing else.
  • Recover on a new device with a passkey or your 24 recovery words. There is nothing to ask anyone for.

How it protects your data

  1. Each file is cut into blocks of at most 256 KiB, and every block is encrypted with AES-256-GCM on your device.
  2. Each block is named by its fingerprint, so any block that arrives is checked against its name. A dishonest peer can waste bandwidth, never slip in false data.
  3. The sealed blocks are kept on your device, on your other devices and on nodes, including your own. Nodes see ciphertext only.
  4. Encryption adds about 0.07% to what is stored, and ten edited versions of a document take about a quarter of the space they would otherwise (benchmarks).

Use case: a person

You keep contracts, photos, health letters and passwords in one place, on your phone and laptop alike. When your accountant needs one contract, you send one link. A week later you stop sharing it. Nobody else ever had your whole archive, and no company can lose, sell or lock it.

Use case: a freelancer or a small company

A studio keeps drafts, briefs and invoices in Drive and shares a single draft with a client by capability link. The client sees that draft only. When the project ends, the studio stops sharing it. Nothing sits in a vendor's cloud waiting to be breached or subpoenaed, because the vendor only ever held ciphertext.

How it differs

Cloud drives hold the keys to your files. Privacy drives seal your files but keep them on their own servers. Drive is sealed on your device and kept by a network of independent nodes, and every node must prove it still holds your data. The comparison goes through it row by row.

Status and limits

Live today in the browser and in the Mac app. Lose both your passkey and your 24 words and no one can recover the vault, because no one else ever held the key. Storage on the network beyond your own devices and node is a testnet service for now.
