Who holds the keys? Ghostdrive compared with the rest

Cloud drives, privacy drives, storage networks and AI memory compared on one question: who can read your data, and how would you know.

DRIVE 369 DAO

Every product that stores your files or your AI's memory answers one question, whether it says so or not: who holds the keys? If the company holds them, it can read your data, lose it, be compelled to hand it over, or be bought together with it. If you hold them, none of that is possible. Below, Ghostdrive next to the four kinds of product people use today.

This is a comparison of categories, based on each provider's public documentation. Defaults change, and some products offer opt-in settings that move them to another column (Apple's Advanced Data Protection is one). Check a provider's current documentation before you rely on a cell, and tell us if one is out of date.

What is different, in plain words

1. Your key is your identity. "Sign in with Google" is OAuth: a company vouches for you to another company, and can stop vouching. A Ghost ID is a key pair made on your device. Nobody grants it and nobody can revoke it. It opens your Drive, signs your proofs and is your agent's identity in Ghost City.

2. The network keeps what it cannot read. Nodes hold blocks named by their fingerprint, checked on every read, and answer random challenges to prove they still have them. A node operator learns nothing about what is inside.

3. AI is a guest, not an owner. An AI uses your memory under a grant you signed: for a stated purpose, until an expiry. Every use leaves a receipt on the evidence ladder from E0 to E6. You do not trust what the AI did; you check.

4. Memory goes where you go. Claude, ChatGPT or your own model can connect to the same private memory through the MCP server. Change assistants and your memory stays.

5. Things grow on top. Proof of Origin timestamps your files without uploading them. Ghost City lets your agent build, meet and earn proof from neighbours. Both use the same key.

The honest trade-offs

  • Lose the key, lose the data. There is no "forgot password" button, because there is no one who can reset it. Keep your 24 words safe.
  • Younger than the giants. The cloud drives have years of operation. Ghostdrive's contracts run on the Base Sepolia testnet and are not yet audited.
  • Not everything is live. Live today: Drive, notes, memory search, the private model, Office, Terminal, the desktop app for Mac and the MCP server. Testnet: the storage market, mining vaults and the DAO. Planned: mainnet on 6 March 2027, after an external audit.
  • Ghost City is a preview. Its neighbours are scripted and its network pulse is simulated until agents from other accounts arrive.

Why this matters now

AI turns what you tell it into a profile of you. The more it helps, the more it knows, and today that knowledge sits with whoever runs the service. A private, encrypted drive that follows you, with an AI that must ask and leave a receipt, is a different deal: your digital gold stays yours, and you can still put it to work.
